Tabor earns USA South Athlete of the Week honors

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Heather Tabor was named USA South Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Tabor, a Fairhope, Ala. native, went 2-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play on Saturday and Sunday for the Lady Hawks.

On Saturday against Tougaloo, Tabor won 8-4 in singles at the No. 3 position and 8-4 in doubles at the No. 2 position.

Against Centenary, Tabor won 8-4 in doubles in the No. 1 position.

Tabor was the lone win for Huntingdon on Sunday against Millsaps, winning 6-0 6-3 at the No. 4 singles position.  

The Lady Hawks return to action on Wednesday as they host Wesleyan at 4 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Justyn Olson, LaGrange - The junior guard from LaGrange, Georgia averaged 32.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.0 assists per game as the Panthers posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 97-87 win over Huntingdon, Olson totaled 36 points, six rebounds, six steals, three assists and one block. In a 96-90 victory over Piedmont, Olson contributed 28 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist. Also Nominated: Adrian Moore, N.C. Wesleyan; Rashawn Speas, Ferrum; Carter Jones, Averett; Simeon Howard, Greensboro; Will Portlock, Covenant; Peyton Luken, Piedmont; Chris Thomas, William Peace; Dantavius Washington, Huntingdon.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Sam Johnson, William Peace - The Beaufort, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game as the Pacers posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In an 83-79, overtime, win over Methodist, Johnson tied a career-high with 22 points to go with seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. In a 93-86 victory over Greensboro, Johnson totaled eight points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Also Nominated: Steven Jones, Ferrum; Austin DeLucia, Averett; Brandon McLean, Huntingdon.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Samm Chandler, Averett - The Burnsville, North Carolina sophomore guard averaged 17.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.7 blocks per game last week as the Cougars posted a 3-0 record versus USA South competition. In a 66-63 win over Methodist, Chandler notched a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four steals, three assists and two blocks. In a 98-43 victory over Mary Baldwin, Chandler, in just 19 minutes played, posted 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block. Finally, in an 84-76 win over Meredith, Chandler scored 15 points, dished out seven assists, grabbed four rebounds, collected two steals and blocked two shots. Also Nominated: Mackenzie Puckett, Maryville; Kemani Crawford, Ferrum; Le'Shaunda Jones, Piedmont; Alexis Wallace, Methodist.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Joanna Smith, Covenant - The Chattanooga, Tennessee freshman guard averaged a double-double of 15.3 points and 10.0 rebounds to go along with 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game as the Scots posted a 2-1 record. In a 55-49 win over USA South foe Meredith, Smith totaled 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. In a 73-60 victory over Wesleyan, Smith notched a double-double of 22 points and 17 rebounds to go along with two steals. Finally, in a 71-52 loss to Maryville, Smith contributed 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Also Nominated: Alixis Roccia, Averett; Tiarrial Duncan, Huntingdon; Alexia Hines, Methodist.

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
James Lovett, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior catcher from West Palm Beach, Florida went a combined 9-for-16 (.563) with a slugging percentage of 1.188, eight runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, one walk and one stolen base as the Bishops posted a 7-1 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Castleton, Lovett was a combined 2-for-6 with three RBI, two runs scored and one triple. In a doubleheader sweep of CCNY, Lovett was a combined 4-for-5 with four runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, one home run and one stolen base. Finally, in a doubleheader split with Roanoke, Lovett was a combined 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI and one home run. Also Nominated: Tyler Bigler, Maryville; James Wilkins, Greensboro; Kyle Walsh, Averett; Trenton Nobles, Covenant; Evan Gresham, Piedmont; Alec Raley, Huntingdon; Alex Rodriguez, Methodist.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
T.J. Wilkie, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina tossed a complete-game, seven-inning, shutout in an 11-0 victory over CCNY in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Bishops. Wilkie went the distance allowing just two hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts. Also Nominated: Seth Debity, Maryville; Dustin Minnick, Greensboro; T.J. Viracola, Averett; Travis Johnson, Methodist; Ryan Broaderick, LaGrange.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Daniel Efird, Greensboro - The freshman second baseman from Oakboro, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-12 (.500) with two runs scored, one double, one walk and three stolen bases as the Pride posted a 2-2 record last week. In a 5-1 win over Wesley, Efird was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one double. In a 5-4 victory over Hampden-Sydney, Efird was hitless but walked once and stole two bases. Finally, in two losses to Wesley, Efird was a combined 3-for-6 with one run scored and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Ross Jackson, Averett.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Chris Campbell, Averett - The Tifton, Georgia junior, playing his first year of collegiate baseball, tossed 2.2 shutout innings of relief last week for the Cougars in two appearances. Campbell allowed two hits and four walks with two strikeouts, earning two no-decisions. Also Nominated: None.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Maggie McDaniel, Piedmont - The Newnan, Georgia senior midfielder totaled ten points on five goals and five assists with six caused turnovers, five draw controls and one ground ball in a 2-0 week for the Lions. In a 16-1 victory over Oglethorpe, McDaniel scored twice with two assists, four caused turnovers, two draw controls and one ground ball. In a 13-12 win over Sewanee, McDaniel scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining which snapped Sewanee's 23-game regular season unbeaten streak. She totaled three goals, three assists, three draw controls and two caused turnovers in the victory. Also Nominated: Katie Burnet, Maryville.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Victoria Doyle, Meredith - The Danbury, Connecticut senior midfielder had game highs of eight caused turnovers and seven draw controls in a 15-10 win over Marymount in the team's only contest last week. She also added two goals and five ground balls in the victory. Also Nominated: Blake Forrest, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Julie Capretti, Meredith - The Ashburn, Virginia freshman attacker tallied six points on four goals and two assists in a 15-10 win over Marymount in the team's only contest last week. She also added two ground balls and one draw control in the victory. Also Nominated: Kaelyn Holland, Methodist.

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Lindsey Wiggins, William Peace - The junior infielder from Durham, North Carolina has gone a combined 13-for-21 (.619) with a 1.286 slugging percentage, 11 runs scored, ten RBI, five doubles, three home runs and three walks as the Pacers have begun the season with a 5-1 record. In a doubleheader sweep of Salem, Wiggins was a combined 4-for-7 with two runs scored, two RBI, two doubles and one walk. In a doubleheader sweep of Case Western, Wiggins was a combined 6-for-8 with five runs scored, five RBI, two doubles and two home runs. Finally, in a doubleheader split with Guilford, Wiggins was a combined 3-for-6 with four runs scored, three RBI, one double, one home run and two walks. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Mary Beth Smith, Averett - The Elon, North Carolina senior has earned a 2-0 record with a 2.52 ERA in three appearances and 16.2 innings pitched while allowing six runs on 15 hits with two walks and 16 strikeouts so far this season on the mound for the Cougars. Smith earned two complete-game victories over third-ranked DePauw as she allowed a total of three runs with 14 strikeouts. Additionally, at the plate, Smith has compiled a .400 batting average with two RBI and one run scored. Also Nominated: Courtney Rudd, Ferrum; Maddy Wetherholt, Greensboro; Kayla Aloisi, Maryville; Taylor Jackson, Meredith; Joni Johnson, Covenant; Sarah Walker, Piedmont; Morgan Farmer, William Peace.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Alexus Murray, Maryville - The freshman catcher from Buford, Georgia has gone a combined 12-for-26 (.462) with a .731 slugging percentage, ten RBI, six runs scored, four doubles, one home run and three walks as the Scots have begun the season with a 3-5 record. In a two losses to Birmingham Southern, Murray was a combined 3-for-6 with one run batted in, one run scored, one double and one walk. In a doubleheader split with Berry, Murray was a combined 2-for-6 with one double. In a two-game split with Centre, Murray was a combined 3-for-7 with four RBI, two runs scored, one double and one walk. Finally, in a two-game split with Emory & Henry, Murray was a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI, three runs scored, one home run and one walk. Also Nominated: Logan Barbour, Ferrum; Ellen Blevins, Meredith; Madalyn Ames, Covenant; Taylor Hodges, Averett; Sydney Kinard, Piedmont; Kacy Haithcock, William Peace.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Maddy Wetherholt, Greensboro - The freshman has earned a 2-1 record with a 3.23 ERA in four appearances, three starts, and 21.2 innings pitched while allowing 21 runs, ten of which were earned, on 33 hits with ten walks and 13 strikeouts so far this season on the mound for the Pride. Both of Wetherholt's victories were of the complete-game variety including a five-hit shutout versus Roanoke. Also Nominated: None.

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
R.J. Clement, Methodist - The sophomore from Sugar Hill, Georgia earned a victory at both the number-one singles and number-two doubles positions last week in a match versus USA South foe Covenant in the team's only action. In singles action, Clement won a three-set match versus Covenant's Matthew Harvie who just the day before had defeated a nationally-ranked player from N.C. Wesleyan. In doubles, Clement teamed with Teal Howard to collect the victory. Also Nominated: Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan; Matthew Harvie, Covenant; Nathan Metzger, Piedmont.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
J.D. Telles, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from San Salvador, El Salvador has earned a 3-1 singles and doubles record so far this spring. In singles action, he collected two wins at the number-four position and one win, over USA South foe Covenant, at the number-three spot. In doubles, Telles teamed with Mike Konnov to earn each victory at the number-two position. Also Nominated: Harrison LaBollita, Piedmont.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Aly Hall, Covenant - The sophomore from Orlando, Florida earned a 2-1 singles record and a 1-2 doubles mark both at the top positions last week for the Scots. In singles, Hall's two victories came versus USA South competition in wins over opponents from N.C. Wesleyan and Methodist. In doubles, she teamed with Annie DeLuca to collect a win victory over N.C. Wesleyan. Also Nominated: Nicole Parrish, Piedmont.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Heather Tabor, Huntingdon - The freshman from Fairhope, Alabama earned a 2-0 singles record and a 2-1 doubles record last week for the Hawks. In singles, Tabor earned victories at the number-three and four spots over opponents from Tougaloo and Millsaps, respectively. In doubles, Tabor teamed with both Caroline McBroom and Sandy Mayson to collect wins at the number-two and one positions over Tougaloo and Centenary. Also Nominated: Tabea Soelter, Piedmont; Jenna Landis, Methodist.
