Huntingdon women split in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team defeated University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez but fell to George Fox University on Tuesday.

The Lady Hawks (11-4) took down Division II Puerto Rico 5-4 and lost 8-1 to George Fox. The Bruins are ranked 18th in the West Region of Division III.

Against Puerto Rico, Huntingdon trailed 2-1 after doubles play. The No. 1 team of Dusty Catala and Mariah Bastos won 8-4 and pushed their winning streak to six matches.

In singles play, Huntingdon won at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to capture the match. Catala (No. 1) won 6-1, 6-0, Josie Waddell (No. 2) won 6-0, 6-3 and Bastos (No. 3) took a 6-3, 6-2.

With four points on the day, Caroline McBroom sealed the win for Huntingdon. Playing at No. 5, the junior won 7-6, 6-3.  

In the second match of the day, the Lady Hawks struggled with the Bruins of George Fox.  The No. 1 doubles team of Catala and Bastos won 9-8 to give the Lady Hawks their only win on the day. For the season, the freshman duo has won 10-of-11 matches played together.

Huntingdon travels to Albany State on April 4. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
