Huntingdon volleyball hosts 2012 Jubilee this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon volleyball team opens the season this weekend with the 2012 Huntingdon College Jubilee. The Lady Hawks will host the five-team tournament in Roland Arena and Wilson Gym.

First-year Huntingdon head coach Amy Patterson said she hopes the tournament will grow into a yearly event.

"We want this to just be the start," Patterson said. "We want to keep it a Division III tournament, but we want to see it grow into a bigger tournament in the coming years. We have four quality teams coming in this year and we want to add more quality teams next year."

In addition to Huntingdon, the tournament will consist of Birmingham-Southern, LaGrange College, Mississippi College and Piedmont College.

"This will be a good opportunity for us to face quality competition during the opening weekend," Patterson said. "Facing this kind of competition should help us see where we stand and what we need to improve on as we move forward. The first weekend is always a measuring stick to see where you are.

"This year it's even more so because this will be the first time we (Patterson and assistant coach Jamie McCormack) have seen how the girls compete against other Division III teams."

There is no admission to the tournament and play begins at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Huntingdon opens with Birmingham-Southern at 2 p.m. on Friday and plays LaGrange at 4 p.m. on Friday. Both matches will be in Roland Arena. On Saturday, Huntingdon will play two matches in Wilson Gym. The Lady Hawks play Mississippi College at 10 a.m. and Piedmont at 2 p.m.
