Hawks down Ferrum, take North Division leader Averett to 5 games

DANVILLE, Va. – The Huntingdon volleyball team split a pair of USA South Athletic Conference matches on Saturday but picked up its sixth win in eight matches.

The Hawks fell to Averett in five games, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 25-16, 10-15 and knocked off Ferrum in four games, 25-12, 29-27, 21-25, 25-20. Averett (22-9, 14-2 USA South) leads the North Division standings.

Audrianna Hargitt, Bria Rochelle, Kalen Morgan, Deidre Corbin, Ashley Childs and Ashton Flores combined for 100 kills in the two matches and Cora Murchison and Lexi Rangel combined for 95 assists for Huntingdon (12-18, 3-10 USA South).

In the match with Averett, Hargitt had 12 kills, nine digs and three blocks and Rochelle had 11 kills and 10 digs. Morgan finished with nine kills and four blocks, Corbin added six kills and Childs followed with five kills. Flores had three kills and a career-high eight blocks.

Murchison recorded 21 assists and eight digs and Rangel added 18 assists and nine digs. Lauren Condon finished with a team-high 16 digs.

In the win over Ferrum (14-13, 8-8 USA South), Hargitt had a career-high 18 kills to go with nine digs. Rochelle finished with 12 kills and 12 digs, Corbin had eight kills and Morgan had seven kills. Flores recorded five kills and two blocks and Childs added four kills and two blocks.

Murchison finished with 29 assists and five digs and Rangel totaled 27 assists, nine digs and three aces. Condon recorded 16 digs and four aces and Bobie Wilson finished with 12 digs.

Huntingdon travels to Tuskegee on Monday for a 6 p.m. match.
