Hawks extend winning streak and earn first NCAA-era win against Covenant

DECATUR, Ga.  – The Huntingdon volleyball team extended one streak, ended another and moved into first place in the West Division of the USA South Athletic Conference on Saturday.

With a sweep of Agnes Scott and defending conference champion Covenant in a tri-match, the Hawks matched their longest winning streak during the past decade and earned their first win against Covenant during the NCAA era.

The Hawks downed Agnes Scott in four games (25-23, 16-25, 25-21, 25-22) and beat Covenant in five games (30-28, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25, 15-12) to push their winning streak to six matches.

The six-match winning streak is tied for the longest streak by the Hawks since at least 2006. Complete records before 2006 are not readily available.

The win over Covenant was the Hawks' first in 18 meetings since 2009, when Covenant began transitioning to Division III. Before 2009, the teams played once with Huntingdon winning in 2001.

With Saturday's victories, Huntingdon (4-0 USA South) is the only remaining West team that is unbeaten in conference play. Covenant (4-1 USA South) and Piedmont (4-1 USA South) are tied for second in the West.

Amy Tyma helped spark the Hawks with 33 kills and 40 digs on Saturday. Setter Kaitlyn Carter totaled 56 assists. Tyma leads the USA South with 206 kills this season and Carter is sixth in the conference with 305 assists.
