Tyma leads All-Conference volleyball selections for Hawks
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Four Huntingdon volleyball players were recognized with the release of the USA South All-Conference awards on Thursday.
Amy Tyma was named first-team All-Conference and first-team West Division, Alexis Creasman was named first-team West Division and Kaitlyn Carter and Addison Genard were each named second-team West Division.
Tyma is the first Huntingdon volleyball player to earn first-team All-Conference recognition since the Hawks became a member of the USA South in 2013. Tyma, who was a first-team West Division selection last season, is Huntingdon's first two-time West Division selection.
As a group, Huntingdon's four West Division selections are part of a select group of Huntingdon volleyball players. Before this season, just three Hawks (Tyma, Audrianna Hargitt and Bria Rochelle) had earned first- or second-team West Division honors.
The four helped lead the Hawks to one of their best seasons of the NCAA era. Huntingdon (21-12) reached 20 wins for the first time since 2005 and put together a seven-match winning streak during the season, its longest since at least 2006. The Hawks recorded back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2008 and 2009 seasons, reached the conference tournament for a third consecutive season and made a second straight appearance in the USA South Tournament quarterfinals.
Tyma led Huntingdon with 354 kills and 448 digs, was second with 36 aces and third with 43 blocks. Through the completion of the conference tournament quarterfinals, Tyma led the USA South in kills and was sixth in digs. Her 354 kills are the second most in a season by a Hawk since 2006. Records before 2006 are not readily available.
The sophomore had double-digit kills in 19 matches and double-digit digs in 24 matches, including a season-high 19 kills against Oglethorpe and Maryville and a career-high 34 digs in a win over Piedmont.
Creasman was second on the Huntingdon team with 249 kills this season and was fourth with 40 blocks. She had double-digit kills in 10 matches, including a season-high 15 kills against North Carolina Wesleyan, LaGrange and Brevard. She finished with a season-high four blocks against Tuskegee and Covenant.
Carter led Huntingdon with 566 assists and 46 aces this season and was fourth on the team with 184 digs. Through the conference quarterfinals, she ranked fourth in the USA South in aces and ninth in assists. Carter had a season-high 34 assists against LaGrange and finished with double-digit assists in 28 matches. The senior ended her career with 1,668 assists, the third most by a Hawk since 2006.
Genard led Huntingdon with 97 blocks this season and was third on the team with 216 kills. Through the first two rounds of the USA South Tournament, Genard ranked first in the conference in blocks. She had double-digit kills in five matches, including a season-high 12 against Rhodes. She recorded multiple blocks in all but six matches this season, including a career-best nine blocks against Tuskegee.
Senior Nichole LeFevre was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.
Meredith's Caroline Corey was named conference Player of the Year and Meredith's Fiona Barkley was named Coach of the Year. Maryville's Meredith Bonee earned Rookie of the Year honors and William Peace's Emily Braxton was selected as the Libero of the Year.
