Murphy and Henry recognized as USA South Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two Huntingdon student-athletes were named Athletes of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference on Monday.

Senior Matt Murphy was named Defensive Player of the Week for men's lacrosse and junior Wallace Henry was named the Pitcher of the Week for baseball.

This is the first recognition of the spring for Murphy, but the fourth time Huntingdon has been recognized with the Defensive Player of the Week this season. This is also Henry's first recognition of the season, but the fifth time a Huntingdon pitcher has been recognized.

Murphy was recognized for his performance in a 9-3 win over Piedmont. The goalie from McDonough, Ga., recorded 11 saves and six ground balls and allowed three goals as the Hawks won their seventh straight game against Piedmont.

Entering Monday's game with Centre, Murphy had 94 saves, was second in the USA South with 75 goals allowed and led the conference with a 9.66 goals allowed average.

Henry made one appearance for the 11th-ranked Hawks last week and pitched nine scoreless innings in a 7-0 win over Brevard. It was the first complete game of the season by a Hawk.

The Deatsville, Ala., native faced just three batters in five of the nine innings and did not face more than five batters in any inning. Henry finished the game with six strikeouts, two walks and scattered five hits.

For the season, Henry is 3-1 with one save, a 2.38 ERA, 23 strikeouts, 13 walks and has given up 30 hits in 34 innings.
