Melton named USA South Softball Pitcher of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon softball player Lauren Melton was chosen as one of the USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.

The sophomore was named the Pitcher of the Week. This is the first time this season the Wadley, Ala., native has earned the recognition and the third time a Huntingdon pitcher has been recognized this spring.

Melton was recognized for her performance in a pair of conference doubleheaders. In four appearances, Melton was 2-0 with a save, eight strikeouts, four walks and 13 hits allowed and did not allow an earned run in 17 2/3 innings.

In a 3-2 win over Agnes Scott, Melton earned the win in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four, scattering six hits and walking none. In the second game against Agnes Scott, a 3-1 win, Melton pitched a complete game, striking out four, walking two, allowing three hits and one unearned run in seven innings.

Melton earned a no-decision in an 8-5 win over Covenant, walking two, allowing two hits and one unearned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Melton closed the doubleheader with a save, allowing two hits and no runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief in a 5-3 win over Covenant.

For the season, Melton is 8-3 with two saves and a 2.83 ERA. In 21 appearances, she has pitched one shutout and six complete games and has 49 strikeouts and 32 walks in 89 innings.
