Huntingdon spring sports begin play this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The spring season begins this weekend for Huntingdon College athletics.

Baseball and men's and women's lacrosse begin their seasons this weekend and softball and men's and women's tennis are scheduled to open their seasons on Feb. 15. Beach volleyball will begin play on Feb. 21 and men's and women's golf open their seasons on March 9.

 

Baseball

The Huntingdon baseball team opens the season with the Firehouse Classic. The four-team tournament is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Posey Field.

The Hawks will open the season against Belhaven at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will play a doubleheader against Rhodes on Sunday, beginning at noon.

The Hawks are coming off a 24-win season and are ranked fifth in the USA South preseason poll.

 

Women's Lacrosse

The women's lacrosse team opens the season at home on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the University of Dallas.

After a year of improvement in 2019, the Hawks are ranked 10th in the USA South preseason poll and looking for continued improvement this season.

 

Men's Lacrosse

The men's lacrosse team will begin the season on the road in Texas and Louisiana this weekend. The Hawks play at the University of Dallas on Saturday at 1 p.m. and at Centenary on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Hawks are ranked sixth in the preseason conference poll and hope to earn a return trip to the conference tournament.

 

Softball

The softball team will host Rhodes College and Louisiana College to open the season on Feb. 15-16. On Feb. 15, the Hawks will play Rhodes at noon and Louisiana College at 2 p.m.

Huntingdon enters the season ranked third in the West Division of the USA South preseason poll. The Hawks are coming off a 31-15 season, the program's best record during the NCAA era.

 

Women's Tennis

The women's tennis team opens the season on the road on Feb. 15. The Hawks play Fort Valley State at 1 p.m. and Albany State at 4 p.m.

The team is ranked second in the West Division of the USA South preseason poll and is coming off a 14-win season. The Hawks have put together 15 straight winning seasons.

 

Men's Tennis

The men's tennis team will begin its season at Tuskegee on Feb. 15.

The Hawks are coming off of a 10-win season and are ranked fourth in the West Division of the USA South preseason poll.

 

Beach Volleyball

The beach volleyball program has increased its season win total in each of its first three seasons. The Hawks enter their fourth season looking for continued progress.

Huntingdon opens the season in William Carey's Battle of the Bay on Feb. 21-22. Huntingdon will play William Carey and Pearl River on Day 1 and close the tournament against Spring Hill on Day 2.  

 

Men's Golf

The men's golf team opens the spring season in the Savannah Harbor Classic on March 9-10.

Huntingdon enters the spring ranked third in Division III. The Hawks earned one team win and placed in the top three in four tournaments during the fall season. Senior Drew Mathers, who earned two wins in the fall, is ranked No. 1 in Division III.

 

Women's Golf

The women's golf team will also open the spring season in the Savannah Harbor Classic on March 9-10.

The Hawks finished the fall season with two top-10 finishes.
