Hawks knock off Emory in first road game of the season

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team made its first road trip of the season on Wednesday.

The Hawks scored five runs with two outs in the third inning to spark a 7-5 win over Emory.

John Rice (1-2) picked up the win, striking out four, walking one, giving up five hits and three earned runs in six innings. Will Davis, Parker Adams and Tyler Spivey each pitched one inning of relief. Spivey, a freshman, picked up his fourth save in five appearances this season.

Huntingdon (10-3) fell behind 3-0 in the second inning but took the lead in the third inning. After two quick outs to start the third, Huntingdon sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs.

Joseph Odom doubled in Seth Currie and Grant Brown for the first two runs. Jordan Freeman followed with a two-run double, scoring Odom and Trey Smith. Freeman closed the inning's scoring on an Evan Agnew single.

Emory (5-5) cut it to 5-4 in the fourth but Huntingdon answered with two more runs in the fifth as a Tyler Blackwell single scored Freeman and Agnew.

The Hawks carried a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth before Spivey helped seal the win. Spivey got a strikeout and a ground out to start the ninth before surrendering a hit and a walk. With runners on first and second, Spivey got another strikeout to end the game.

Currie and Agnew each had three hits for the Hawks. Freeman finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs.

Huntingdon returns to action on Saturday at Posey Field, hosting Birmingham-Southern in a doubleheader.
