Huntingdon baseball splits on Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Huntingdon baseball team lost to Millsaps 9-7 in its first game Sunday before closing out the weekend with an 8-0 win over Capital Sunday night.

Grant Brown and Joseph Odom led the Hawks (6-4) at the plate. Brown finished the day 5-for-7 with four runs and a RBI and Odom was 4-for-10 with a solo home run, three RBIs and three runs.

Against Millsaps (6-2), Huntingdon gave up seven runs in the first two innings and trailed 8-2 before rallying. A Seth Currie sacrifice fly and a Brown single scored Keegan Lambeth and Austin White in the for the Hawks' first two runs.

Odom led off the third inning with a solo home run and Trey Smith scored on an Evan Agnew single. White scored on a Jordan Freeman sacrifice fly to make it an 8-5 game.

Huntingdon closed the gap to one run in the fourth inning as Brown and Odom both scored on errors. Millsaps added a final run in the sixth inning and held off the Hawks.

Chris Barrentine (1-1) took the loss.

Gavin Free (2-1) picked up the win in Game 2, striking out 10, walking 2 and allowing four hits in seven innings. Nathan Edwards and Neil Lawler each pitched an inning of relief to preserve the shutout against Capital (0-3).

Brown scored the Hawks' first three runs, scoring on an Odom double in the first inning, an Astin single in the third inning and an Odom double in the fifth inning.

A Cameron Lewis single scored Odom and a sacrifice fly by White scored Trey Smith to make it 5-0 in the fifth inning. Smith drove in Currie in the sixth inning and the Hawks ended the scoring with two runs in the seventh inning. White scored on a Capital error and Astin drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jordan Green.

Huntingdon returns to action on Friday at Posey Field, hosting Emory at 5 p.m.
