Huntingdon baseball knocks off ranked BSC for 2nd time in two games

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Huntingdon baseball team scored four runs in the middle innings and used solid pitching to knock off 17th-ranked Birmingham-Southern 4-1 on Tuesday at Posey Field.

The win was the fourth in four games since Friday for the Hawks (12-5) and the second straight win over the Panthers (11-7). Huntingdon handed then-10th-ranked Birmingham-Southern a 4-3 loss in 10 innings on Saturday.

In Tuesday's game, Huntingdon scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Huntingdon used three hits and an error to take the lead.

A Keegan Lambeth single scored Joseph Odom to tie the game and an Evan Agnew single scored Trey Smith to give the Hawks the lead. Lambeth scored on a Tyler Blackwell single to make it 3-1 and Caleb Astin scored on a Smith single to close the scoring in the fifth.

Astin finished the game with three of the Hawks' seven hits on a 3-for-4 night.

The Hawks' pitchers limited Birmingham-Southern to six hits and frustrated the Panthers most of the night. When the Hawks did get in a tight situation in the top of the eighth inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, reliever Neil Lawler forced a pop fly to end the inning.

Starter Grant Lowman (1-0) picked up the win, striking out four, walking two and allowing four hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. Lawler got the save in 1 1/3 innings.

Huntingdon returns to action at Posey Field on Friday against Methodist. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
