Huntingdon baseball completes sweep of Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team swept Covenant 4-3 and 10-4 on Saturday in a pair of seven-inning games. Huntingdon won the first game of the series 6-4 on Friday.

Huntingdon (23-9) carries a seven-game winning streak into Tuesday's game with 20th-ranked Birmingham-Southern. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Posey Field.

On Saturday, catcher Joseph Odom finished the day 3-for-6 with a two-run homer, six RBIs and one run. Odom's home run was his 13th of the season, the most by a Huntingdon player during the NCAA era. Odom, who leads Division III in home runs this season, has 27 career home runs in three seasons.

Caleb Astin was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with two RBIs and two runs. Trey Smith was 3-for-7 with a RBI and a run and Seth Currie was 3-for-6 with a RBI and two runs.

In Game 1, Covenant (22-10) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning before Huntingdon answered with four runs in the fifth and sixth innings. An Odom double scored Astin and Grant Brown in the fifth inning. In the sixth, a Brown RBI scored Evan Agnew and Jordan Freeman scored on an error.

Joseph Fincher (4-2) earned the win in Game 1 and Neil Lawler picked up his fifth save of the season while striking out three. Starter Gavin Free went 4 2/3 innings, striking out five, walking four and allowing three unearned runs. Craig Brown (5-1) picked up the win in Game 2 in 4 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Huntingdon scored in all but one inning. The Hawks took a 5-1 lead in the first two innings. Odom's two-run homer opened the scoring in the first inning and a Cameron Sweat RBI single made it 3-0. Sacrifice flies by Astin and Odom brought in two runs in the second inning.

Grant Brown scored two runs in the second game, Freeman had two hits and a run, Austin White had a RBI and a run and Keegan Lambeth scored once.
