Huntingdon knocks off 12th-ranked Millsaps in the bottom of the 9th

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Will Pharis his hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Huntingdon baseball team to a 4-3 win over 12th-ranked Millsaps on Tuesday.

The Hawks (4-3) were held to three hits in the first eight innings before Trammell DeJarnett and Tyler Blackwell led off the ninth with a single and a double. After J. Gardiner was walked to load the bases, Pharis singled through the left side to score DeJarnett and end the game.

The win is the third straight for the Hawks and evens the record with Millsaps (4-3) to 1-1 this season. Neil Lawler (1-0) picked up the win in two innings of relief.

Victor Taylor scored Huntingdon's first run on a Jordan Freeman sacrifice fly in the second inning and the Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Blackwell drove in Gunnar Peters.

Huntingdon led 3-1 in the seventh after Taylor drove in Landon Sessions with a fielder's choice before Millsaps tied the game 3-3 in the top of the eighth.

DeJarnett was the only Huntingdon player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3.

Huntingdon opens USA South Athletic Conference play on Friday at North Carolina Wesleyan.
