Huntingdon baseball sweeps N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon baseball team completed a three-game conference sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan with a 9-4 win on Monday.

The Hawks (7-3, 3-0 USA South) scored four runs in the first two innings and five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to win their sixth straight game.

Seniors Nathan Edwards and Trammell DeJarnett combined for six hits, four RBIs and three runs to lead Huntingdon. Edwards was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run and DeJarnett was 3-for-5 with two runs and a RBI.

Jordan Freeman drove in two runs and scored once. Gunnar Peters and Tyler Blackwell each had two hits, two runs and a RBI and Will Pharis had two hits, a RBI and a run.

Huntingdon took the lead early as Blackwell doubled to score Peters and then scored on an Edwards single to make it 2-0 in the first inning. In the second inning, Freeman scored on a Peters double and Peters scored on a DeJarnett double to make it 4-0.

N.C. Wesleyan (2-7, 0-3 USA South) scored three runs in the middle innings to make it 4-3 after six innings. The Hawks answered with four runs in the seventh.

Edwards singled to drive in Blackwell and DeJarnett and Freeman tripled to score Edwards and Pharis. Leading 8-3 in the eighth inning, DeJarnett scored the Hawks' final run on a Pharis single.

Gavin Free (2-1) picked up the win, striking out four, walking four, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs in six innings. Trey Worthington earned his first save of the season with a walk, an earned run and three hits in three innings.

Huntingdon was scheduled to play at Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday, but the game has been postponed until March 5.

The Hawks return to action on Friday at Posey Field for the first of a three-game conference series with LaGrange. Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. on Friday.
