Hawks win Game 3 to take conference series from Methodist
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team won its fourth conference series of the season with a 5-2 win against Methodist on Sunday.
The Hawks (11-4, 11-4 USA South) and Monarchs (9-7, 4-5 USA South) split on Saturday with Methodist winning the first game 7-6 and Huntingdon winning the second game 4-3.
Huntingdon scored three runs in the first inning on Sunday and added two more runs in the middle innings. The Hawks' pitching and defense took care of the rest.
Starter Jared Gonzalez (3-0) went six innings, struck out five, walked one and allowed five hits and two earned runs to get the win. Senior Trey Worthington pitched one inning of relief before Mason Throneberry earned his fourth save of the season with two strikeouts, a walk and one hit in two innings.
Right fielder Anthony Spivey drove in the Hawks' first two runs of the game with a single that scored Patrick Kucera and Alec Raley. Gunnar Peters drove in Jordan Freeman to make it 3-1.
Methodist cut it to 3-2 in the third inning before the Hawks added their final two runs. Throneberry scored on an error in the fourth inning and Freeman closed the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday with its first non-conference game of the season. The Hawks host Oglethorpe at 6 p.m.
