Huntingdon drops non-conference game with Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team stepped out of conference play for the first time this season on Tuesday night.

The Hawks built a five-run lead early in the game but came up short to Oglethorpe 11-10.

Huntingdon (11-5) led 6-1 after five innings and led 7-4 after six innings. Oglethorpe (7-6) tied the game 7-7 in the seventh inning and took the lead for good in the eighth inning. The Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth but could not regain the lead.

Five Hawks finished with multiple hits and Huntingdon totaled 14 hits for the game. Left fielder Alec Raley had two hits, two RBIs and a run and center fielder Patrick Kucera had two hits and two runs.

Right fielder Anthony Spivey and shortstop Dakota Beane each had two hits, a RBI and a run and second baseman Mason Throneberry had two hits and a run. First baseman Will Pharis drove in two runs and third baseman Jordan Freeman scored two runs. Designated hitter Kevin Johnston and catcher Clark Berry each had a RBI and a run. Berry also had two stolen bases.

Matt Gatewood (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks in relief. Freshman Blake Bailey, in his first collegiate start, went 5 1/3 innings, struck out seven, scattered eight hits and allowed four runs.

Huntingdon returns to conference play this weekend at home with a three-game series against Piedmont. Game 1 is set for Friday at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
