Huntingdon closes out conference play with 5th USA South sweep

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team broke open a tie game in the sixth inning and knocked off Covenant 9-5 on Tuesday.

The game was originally scheduled for last Friday but was postponed due to weather. Huntingdon took the first two games of the series 5-4 and 12-5 on Saturday.

Tuesday's win marked the third straight conference sweep for the Hawks and the fifth conference sweep of the season. Huntingdon won eight of its 10 USA South series this season.

The Hawks (24-15, 22-8 USA South) are second in the USA South standings behind 19th ranked Methodist (21-6 USA South). Methodist will close out its conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series at LaGrange (13-21, 12-12 USA South).

In the final game against Covenant (14-21, 10-14 USA South), the score was tied 2-2 entering the sixth inning. Huntingdon sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning and pulled away with six runs on five hits, including four runs with two outs.

Third baseman Jordan Freeman's two-run single gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead. Shortstop Dakota Beane singled to score another run and left fielder Alec Raley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Leading by four runs, designated hitter Anthony Spivey recorded his second hit of the inning. The two-run single made it 8-2.

Spivey finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run and Freeman was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Beane was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run. Catcher Coleson Taylor had one RBI and one run, first baseman Will Pharis scored two runs, Raley had one RBI and center fielder Patrick Kucera and right fielder Gunnar Peters each scored one run.

Trey Worthington (4-1) picked up the win in two innings of relief.
