Huntingdon knocks off Millsaps in Firehouse Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team closed out the Firehouse Classic with a 6-1 win over Millsaps on Sunday.

The Hawks (2-1) took a two-run lead early and added four runs late in the game while sophomore pitcher Jared Gonzalez kept the Majors (1-2) off balance.

Gonzalez (1-0) picked up the win in seven innings, striking out three, walking three and scattering four hits. Senior Patrick Kucera earned the save, striking out two, walking one and allowing one run and two hits in the final two innings.

Kucera also led Huntingdon at the plate. He was the only Hawk with multiple hits and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Senior Mason Throneberry drove in two runs and scored once and freshman Jay Jordan drove in one run and scored twice. Senior Landon Sessions drove in one run and seniors Alec Raley, Anthony Spivey and Cheston Wesson each scored one run.

Huntingdon took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Kucera single that scored Throneberry and Jordan. The two-run lead stood until the bottom of the seventh when Jordan scored on a single by Sessions.

Huntingdon closed the scoring with three runs in the eighth inning. Raley scored on a ground out by Jordan and Wesson and Spivey scored on a single by Throneberry.

Huntingdon returns to action on Friday in the Millsaps College Tournament. The Hawks will play Ozarks at 1 p.m.
