Hawks overcome errors to get by Ozarks

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon baseball team overcame six errors in the first three innings and downed the University of the Ozarks 9-6 on Friday in the Millsaps College Tournament.

Trailing 4-2 after three innings, the Hawks (3-1) scored one run in the fourth inning and took control with a five-run sixth inning. Huntingdon sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth.

Down by a run in the sixth, Huntingdon tied the game when Cade Conville scored on a sacrifice fly by Landon Sessions. Anthony Spivey drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mason Throneberry and give the Hawks a 5-4 lead. Huntingdon extended its lead on a two-run single by Cody Shoemaker and Hunter Bower closed the inning's scoring with a RBI single.

Bower also scored the Hawks' first and last runs of the game, scoring on a Jay Jordan sacrifice fly in the second inning and a Conville sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

Bower, Shoemaker and Patrick Kucera each had two hits for the Hawks. Bower finished 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs, Shoemaker was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Kucera was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Spivey finished with two RBIs and a run and Sessions had two RBIs. Throneberry scored twice and Conville and Jordan each had a RBI and a run.

Zack Watson (1-1) picked up the win in five innings. C.J. Sauce pitched the final four innings to earn the save.

Huntingdon will continue play in the Millsaps Tournament on Saturday, playing Millsaps at 4 p.m.
