Strong start powers Hawks in Game 2 of Greensboro series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team used another strong start to take care of Greensboro College 9-2 on Saturday in the second game of a three-game series.

The Hawks (10-5, 2-0 USA South) won the first game of the series 12-0 on Friday night. Huntingdon and Greensboro (4-13, 0-2 USA South) will close out the series on Sunday at noon.

In Saturday's game, the Hawks scored six runs in the first two innings and held the Pride to four hits in the first six innings. Senior Anthony Spivey helped set the tone early, driving in four of the Hawks' first six runs.

Spivey hit a three-run home run in the first inning to make it 3-0. In the second inning, a sacrifice fly by Spivey scored Dakota Beane to make it 6-0. In between the home run and the sacrifice fly, Patrick Kucera drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jay Jordan and an RBI single by Alec Raley scored Coleson Taylor.

Leading 6-2 in the fourth inning, Spivey scored when Mason Throneberry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a five-run game. Huntingdon closed the scoring in the sixth inning as Raley scored on an error and Spivey scored on a sacrifice fly by Throneberry.

Spivey finished the game 1-for-1 with the home run, four RBIs and three runs. Throneberry drove in two runs and Alec Raley scored twice and had an RBI. Kucera had an RBI and a run and Taylor, Jordan and Beane each scored once. Raley and Taylor each finished with two hits.

Zach McGrady (3-2) earned the win in seven innings. McGrady struck out four, walked two and gave up five hits and two runs. Matt Gatewood and Scott Robertson each pitched an inning of relief, holding Greensboro to one hit in the final two innings.
