Huntingdon bounces back with win over Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team picked up a 6-1 win over Oglethorpe on Wednesday night.

The Hawks (11-10) scored three runs in the middle innings and added three more runs late to put the game away.

Cheston Wesson, Anthony Spivey, Cody Shoemaker and Josh Hines combined for nine of Huntingdon's 12 hits. Wesson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Spivey was 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases, Shoemaker was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Hines was 2-for-2 with a run.

Landon Sessions drove in one run and Patrick Kucera and Hunter Bower each scored a run.

After Oglethorpe (10-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Huntingdon tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Sessions that scored Hines. The Hawks took the lead on an RBI single by Shoemaker that scored Spivey in the fifth. Shoemaker scored on an RBI single by Wesson to make it 3-1.

In the seventh inning, Spivey scored on an error before Wesson singled to drive in Bower. Kucera scored the final run of the game on a Spivey single in the eighth inning.

C.J. Sauce (1-1) earned the win in relief of starter Matt Gatewood. Gatewood, Sauce and Zach McGrady combined for six strikeouts.

Huntingdon returns to action this weekend in a three-game USA South Athletic Conference series at 14th-ranked Piedmont. Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on Friday.
