Hawks complete sweep of 14th-ranked Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team used a five-run fifth inning to take control and knock off 14th-ranked Piedmont College 6-3 on Sunday.

The win capped a three-game sweep for Huntingdon (14-10, 5-4 USA South) and is the first conference sweep of the season for the Hawks. Huntingdon won the first game 14-1 on Friday night and took the second game 8-5 in 10 innings on Saturday.

Piedmont (15-8) dropped to 3-6 in the USA South with the series loss.

Four players combined for nine of the Hawks' 11 hits in the game. Jordan Criswell was 3-for-5 with two runs, Patrick Kucera and Josh Hines were each 2-for-4 with a run and Cheston Wesson was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Mason Throneberry drove in two runs, Anthony Spivey had an RBI and a run, Alec Raley had one RBI and Josh Jackson scored one run.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Criswell scored on a sacrifice bunt by Throneberry to tie the game. In the fifth inning, Huntingdon took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Raley that scored Jackson.

A Spivey single and a Piedmont error allowed Kucera and Hines to score and make it a 4-1 game. Spivey later scored on a single by Wesson and Criswell scored on a sacrifice fly by Throneberry to make it a five-run game.

Jared Gonzalez (3-3) picked up the win in eight innings. Gonzalez struck out three, walked two and allowed 10 hits, two earned runs and one unearned run. Throneberry earned the save in one inning of relief.

The Hawks host second-ranked Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
