Hawks score 26 runs in doubleheader sweep of Elmira

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored 26 runs and put together 30 hits in a 15-3 and 11-8 sweep of Elmira College on Tuesday at Posey Field.

By prior agreement, both games were shortened to seven innings.

Seniors Taylor Fought and Garrett Headley and sophomore Wes Powell combined for 15 hits, 11 RBIs and 16 runs in the two games. Fought was 6-for-8 with five RBIs and four runs in the doubleheader, Headley was 5-for-8 with one RBI, six runs and two doubles and Powell was 4-for-8 with five RBIs and six runs.

In Game 1, Huntingdon pounded out 19 hits and scored in each of the first six innings. Fought was 4-for-4 in Game 1 with three RBIs and a run, including a two-run triple. Headley was 5-for-5 with an RBI and four runs.

Powell had two hits, two RBIs and three runs, Logan Gildea had two hits, three RBIs and a run, Hunter Long had two hits and two RBIs and Joseph Calvert had two hits, an RBI and a run. Jud Owens scored twice, Will Cosby had one RBI and Dakota Beane scored once.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Peterson (1-0) picked up the win in four innings, scattering five hits, walking one and allowing two earned runs. Reliever John Crawford (1-0) picked up the win in Game 2, striking out six and allowing three hits and one earned run in three innings.

The Hawks built a six-run lead in the first three innings of Game 2 before Elmira cut it to a run, 6-5, in the fourth inning. Huntingdon answered with two runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning to build an 11-5 lead. Elmira added three runs in the top of the seventh inning before the Hawks ended the game.

Freshman Bradley Harris was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 2 and Powell was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Fought had two hits, two RBIs and a run and Chandler DeRieux had two hits, two RBIs and two runs.

Calvert had two runs and an RBI, Headley scored twice and stole two bases and Chris Fisher scored once and had two stolen bases.

Coming Up: Huntingdon hosts Brevard in a three-game series at Posey Field this weekend. Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
