Hawks complete series sweep of Brevard

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team took both games of a doubleheader on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep of Brevard College. 

The Hawks won the first game of the doubleheader 14-2 in a shortened seven-inning game and won 12-1 in Game 2. Huntingdon won Game 1 of the series 15-2 in seven innings on Friday night.

Sophomore Garrett Breland drove in seven runs in Saturday's doubleheader and finished the day 6-for-9. Seniors Taylor Fought and Garrett Headley and sophomore Wes Powell combined to score 13 of the Hawks' 26 runs in the final two games. Fought scored five runs and Headley and Powell each scored four runs.

In Game 1, Huntingdon took a 7-2 lead in the first three innings and blew the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning. Headley hit a three-run home run to highlight the sixth inning and finished with three RBIs and three runs.

Breland was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Coleson Taylor was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Joseph Calvert was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Powell had an RBI and scored twice, Fought and Will Cosby each scored two runs and Chandler DeRieux and Dakota Beane each scored once.

Blake Mayes (2-2) earned the win in six innings, striking out seven, giving up six hits, walking two and allowing two earned runs. Kyle Phillips pitched the final inning and struck out one.

The Hawks held Brevard to three hits in Game 2. Huntingdon took control in the middle innings, scoring four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to build a 7-1 lead. The Hawks added three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.

Brooks Freeman (1-0) picked up the win in the second game, scattering three hits, striking out five, walking one and allowing one earned run in six innings. Relief pitchers Jeremy Peterson, Taylor Borst and John Crawford combined for three strikeouts and held Brevard hitless during the final three innings.

Breland was the only Hawk with multiple hits in Game 2 and finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs, two runs and two doubles in the game. Bradley Harris had two RBIs and a run, Fought scored three runs and Powell scored two runs. Cosby and Calvert each had an RBI and a run, Jud Owens and Taylor each had one RBI and Headley and Corey Lowe each scored one run.
