Conville reaches win No. 350 with sweep of Covenant

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team won 10-8 and 5-2 on Saturday to complete a conference sweep of Covenant and help head coach D.J. Conville earn his 350th win.

In his 14th season as the Hawks' head coach, Conville has a career record of 350-217. Huntingdon's all-time winningest baseball coach, he has guided his teams to 20 or more wins in 12 of the past 13 seasons.

Coming off of a 9-3 win over the Scots on Friday, Huntingdon was in a battle in both games on Saturday.

In Game 1, the Hawks scored one run in the first inning and used a five-run second inning and a four-run fifth inning to take a 10-0 lead. But Covenant answered with five runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth inning.

Sophomore pitcher John Crawford helped the Hawks out of their eighth-inning jam and earned his second save of the season. Crawford entered the game with a two-run lead, runners on first and second and one out.

With a ground out and a strikeout, Crawford helped get the Hawks out of the inning. In the ninth, Crawford forced a ground out and fly out before giving up a single. He struck out the final batter to end the game.

Game 1 starter Jared McFall (2-1) picked up the win.

Garrett Headley was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and two doubles in Game 1. Chandler DeRieux was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run and Wes Powell was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.

Will Cosby and Jud Owens were each 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Cosby also had two stolen bases. Joseph Calvert had two runs and two stolen bases and Garrett Breland finished the game with two hits.

In Game 2, sophomore Brooks Freeman (3-3) pitched a complete game four-hitter to get the win. Freeman struck out five, walked three and gave up two earned runs in nine innings. Freeman carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning.

Dakota Beane finished the second game with two RBIs and a run on two hits. Taylor Fought was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Bradley Harris and Calvert each had two hits and a run. Calvert also had two stolen bases. Headley and Cosby each scored once.
