Hawks end run in USA South Tournament with loss to Piedmont

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team beat William Peace 5-4 on Thursday morning but was eliminated from the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament with a 13-9 loss to Piedmont on Thursday night.

The Hawks took a 7-6 lead in the top of the fourth inning against Piedmont, but the Lions answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the fifth. Huntingdon cut Piedmont's lead to three runs, 12-9, in the eighth inning but could not overtake the Lions.

Taylor Fought finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs. Fought hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Will Cosby scored four runs in the game, Wes Powell had two hits and two runs and Bradley Harris had two hits and an RBI.

Chandler DeRieux and Jud Owens each had an RBI and Corey Lowe scored one run.

Ethan Hess (2-3) took the loss in relief.

Against William Peace, Huntingdon took a 5-0 lead in the first four innings and held off the Pacers.

Brooks Freeman (5-3) pitched a complete game for the win. Freeman struck out six, walked one, gave up four hits and allowed two earned runs in nine innings.

DeRieux was 3-for-4 with a run and two doubles and Chris Fisher had two hits and a run. Cosby drove in two runs and scored one run and Owens had one RBI and one run. Fought had one RBI and Harris scored one run.

Coming Up: Huntingdon is scheduled to host Oglethorpe on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
