Hawks fall to Battling Bishops in Rd. 1 of conference tournament

WEST POINT, Ga.  – The Huntingdon baseball team opened the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-2 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday.

After falling behind 3-1 in the seventh inning, Huntingdon scored one run in the bottom of the ninth but could not complete the comeback.

Trailing by two runs in the ninth, Garrett Breland singled to drive in Wes Powell and make it a one-run game. With runners on second and third and one out, the potential tying run was thrown out on a fielder's choice before the Battling Bishops ended the game with a strikeout.

Breland and Chris Fisher each had one RBI and Powell and Nick Swisher each scored one run.

Wallace Henry (5-3) took the loss in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five, walking two, scattering four hits and allowing three runs. Tucker Duke pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out one, walking one and allowing one hit.

 

Records: Huntingdon (22-15); North Carolina Wesleyan (23-14)

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play Piedmont in an elimination game on Friday at Point University's West Field. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. (Central). The winner will advance to play at 7 p.m. (Central) on Friday.
