Hawks shut out Greensboro for 12th straight home win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon football team celebrated Senior Day with a 71-0 win over Greensboro College on Saturday.

The win was the 12th straight at home for the Hawks. Huntingdon's senior class has a 15-1 record at home during the past three seasons and a 19-2 record at home during the past four seasons.

"These seniors have won a lot of games and they've won a lot of games at home," Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk said. "We don't know what the future holds, but we talked before the game that this was the last time they were guaranteed the opportunity to be together as a team and as a family on this field.

"We wanted to make it one to remember and we did because a lot of guys got to play today and a lot of guys played well. We played well in the first half, handled our business and were able to play a lot of people in the second half."

Huntingdon (7-1, 4-1 USA South) put the game away early, scoring 23 points in the first quarter and building a 50-0 lead at halftime. With the game in hand, Huntingdon's backups took the field after halftime as the Hawks scored the second most points in program history.

"This was probably the most fun game I've ever been a part of," Huntingdon senior running back John Iwaniec said. "Not for what any of the starters did, but because of how excited we all were for some of the guys who got in and played today.

"There are a lot of guys who have worked so hard the whole time they've been in this program. It was exciting to see those guys get in and make some big-time plays. The sideline erupted several times today when those guys made plays."

The four-quarter defensive effort resulted in the Hawks' first shutout since 2008 and the sixth shutout in program history.

"It's the first time we've had a zero on the board in a long time," senior defensive lineman Drew Wheeler said. "The reason we were able to do that is because the younger guys came out like they did. Those guys played just as hard as the first-team guys and handled their business for the entire second half."

Quarterback Luke Bailey had a hand in four of the Hawks' first five touchdowns. Bailey connected with Otis Porter for an 8-yard scoring strike and a 43-yard touchdown before hitting Zach Camp for a 6-yard touchdown and a 23-0 lead in the first quarter.

Following a 1-yard touchdown run by Iwaniec, Bailey found Jamichael Bibb for a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Vic Jerald's 2-yard touchdown run and Parker Allen's 9-yard fumble return for a touchdown capped a 50-point first half.

In the second half, freshman Dontavion Cunningham scored on a 6-yard run in the third quarter and sophomore Jonathan Robinson scored on a 15-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Andrew Neswiacheny closed the scoring with a four-yard run for his first touchdown as a Hawk.

Bailey finished with 174 yards passing and 49 yards rushing in the first half. Porter led the receivers with four catches for 64 yards.

Iwaniec rushed for 59 yards on 12 first-half carries. Robinson picked up 64 yards on 12 carries in the second half and Cunningham added 55 yards on 10 carries in the final two quarters.

Chase Young kicked a 24-yard field goal and was 8-for-10 on extra points.

Defensively, Cameron Compton recorded eight tackles, including two tackles for loss and Trent Lewis had six tackles. Trey Hayes, Jalen McDonald, Heath McCray, DeAnte' Griffith and Wheeler each had one sack. Hayes also had two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery and McDonald and Griffith each forced one fumble. Wes Dickey recovered a fumble and Cedrick Lowe picked off one pass.

Huntingdon returns to action on Nov. 5 at Maryville (7-1, 5-0 USA South) at 12:30 p.m. Central.
