Huntingdon downs Brevard for fourth straight win

BREVARD, N.C. – The Huntingdon football team scored 17 points in the third quarter and ran past Brevard College in a 38-10 win on Saturday.

The win was the fourth straight for Huntingdon.

After a pair of Chip Taylor-to-Otis Porter touchdown passes (53 and 9 yards) in the first half, the Hawks carried a 14-3 lead into halftime. Huntingdon pulled away on the first three possessions of the second half as Taylor and Dontavion Cunningham each scored on runs and Chase Young added a 19-yard field goal to give Huntingdon a 31-3 lead.

Eric Thomas capped the Hawks' scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to make it a 38-3 game.

The Turning Point: After scoring on their first two possessions of the game, the Hawks carried a 14-3 lead into the second half.

In the third quarter, Huntingdon put the game away. Taylor capped the first drive of the second half with an 11-yard touchdown run. Cunningham finished the second drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it a 28-3 game.

On Huntingdon's third possession, Young's field goal made it 31-3 with 2:56 left in the third quarter.

Notable Performance: The Huntingdon defense turned in one of its best performances of the season on Saturday, allowing a season-best 275 yards and 10 points. The majority of the yards came on Brevard's first two possessions of the game and the Tornados' last two possessions of the game. 

In between, Huntingdon held Brevard to 50 yards of offense.

On the first possession of the game, the Hawks gave up 44 yards but stopped the Tornados on fourth down. On the second possession of the game, Huntingdon gave up 59 yards and a 32-yard field goal.

In the fourth quarter, Brevard put together a 66-yard drive before Huntingdon's Charlie Jones ended the drive with his first career interception. In the final four minutes, with the game all but over, Brevard put together a 56-yard touchdown drive.

Head Coach Mike Turk on Saturday's win: "Today wasn't perfect, but it was a good performance. We're on track and getting better each week. We've been challenged on offense and defense with injuries this season, but we are continuing to improve. If we can continue to do that, we have a chance to do some good things."
