Hawks fall behind in second half against Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn.  – The Huntingdon football team matched Maryville College for a half on Saturday.

But the Scots pulled away in the final two quarters and handed the Hawks a 42-13 loss.

Behind two first-half field goals from Chase Young, Huntingdon only trailed 7-6 at halftime. The Scots opened the second half with three touchdowns and built a 28-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.

                    

Records: Huntingdon (0-4, 0-2 USA South); Maryville (2-2, 2-0 USA South)

 

The Turning Point: For the first 30 minutes on Saturday, both teams set the tone with defense. At the half, Maryville led 7-6, both teams had eight first downs and the Hawks had 155 yards to the Scots' 140.

But the game began to turn in the third quarter. As Huntingdon was held to 59 yards on 12 plays in the quarter, Maryville scored two touchdowns to take a 21-6 lead. A 67-yard touchdown run, one minute into the fourth quarter, put the Scots ahead 28-6.

Huntingdon answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Michael Lambert to C.J. Pugh to make it 28-13 with 13 minutes to play in the game. The score remained unchanged until the final five minutes when Maryville scored twice to close out the game.

Head Coach Mike Turk on Saturday's loss: "We're disappointed in how things went during the second half today. We played pretty hard and we competed well in the first half. But we fell behind in the second half and we could not recover.

"We will go back to work this week, make the changes we need to make and try to improve. We are going to keep working hard and keep coaching hard and I expect our team to respond positively."
