Huntingdon men’s basketball loses at Rust College

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team fell behind late in the first half and couldn't recover in a 93-71 loss to Rust College on Saturday.

The Hawks trailed 49-37 at the half before Rust extended its lead in the final 20 minutes. Rust shot 65 percent from the field during the first half and 54 percent for the game. Huntingdon shot 38 percent from the field.

Sophomore Jason Varney led the Hawks (2-9) with 24 points. Varney is averaging a little more than 15 points per game this season and has averaged 20.5 points in the past four games.

Willie McDowell added 11 rebounds and six points and Mike Kilpatrick had five assists for the Hawks.

Markeith Wilson scored 24 points and Shun Thompson scored 23 points to lead Rust (6-9). Andrew Birks and Justycze Clark each added 10 points.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday. The Hawks play Berry at 7 p.m.
