Huntingdon men’s basketball falls in overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team missed a free throw at the end of regulation and couldn't get the final shot to fall in overtime as Piedmont escaped with an 89-87 win on Saturday.

The Hawks (7-17, 3-5 Great South Athletic Conference) have lost three straight games by three points or less. This was the seventh loss by five points or less this season.

Tied 78-78 with less than 30 seconds to play in regulation, Piedmont took a one-point lead on a Josh Haymore free throw. Huntingdon's Jeremiah Thomas sank a free throw with two seconds left to tie the game. But Thomas missed his second free throw, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Huntingdon fell behind by five points but only trailed 89-87 in the final minute. After Piedmont's Kyle Lundberg missed a 3-point attempt, Huntingdon called timeout and set up for the final shot. The Hawks didn't find the shot they were looking for and Courtnee Edgar's 3-point attempts was off the mark with two seconds to play.

Piedmont (6-19, 3-5 GSAC) set the tone early in the game, leading by as many as 11 points in the first half. Huntingdon rallied and took its first lead with 10:36 to play in the game. Both teams swapped leads during the remainder of regulation, with neither team able to build more than a five-point lead.

Five players scored all of Huntingdon's points. Edgar and Kanden Blackmon each turned in season-highs with 23 points. Blackmon hit a season-high seven 3-pointers and also had six rebounds. Thomas added 20 points and 11 rebounds, Jason Varney finished with 11 points and six rebounds and Ryan Petty had 10 points and six rebounds.

Lundberg led the Lions with 18 points, Dylan Delaney scored 16 points and Jessie Jenkins followed with 13 points. Richardson Myrthil finished with 11 points and Tyler Arnold and Tracey Gardner each scored 10 points.

Huntingdon closes out the regular season at Pensacola Christian on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
