Huntingdon men can’t hold off Averett in second half

DANVILLE, Va. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team led for almost all of the first 28 minutes on Sunday. But Averett took control midway through the second half and set the tone in the final 12 minutes to hand Huntingdon a 93-83 loss.

Huntingdon (1-11, 1-3 USA South) built a 60-52 lead with 13:12 left in the game. But Averett (7-8, 4-1) answered with a 23-2 run during the next six minutes to take a 75-62 lead and turn the game.

Austin Hill, who leads the USA South Athletic Conference with 20.7 points per game, finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds for Huntingdon. Jerome Davis added 20 points and six assists and T.C. Elmore followed with 13 points. Andre Ashley finished with seven rebounds.

"Austin is playing very well right now," Huntingdon head coach Mike Pugh said. "He's not the only one. We have a lot of guys that are playing hard and giving good effort. We just have to keep working and find a way to win some of these close games."

Huntingdon hosts Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
