Huntingdon men’s basketball picks up sixth win in seven games

DEMOREST, Ga. – Sophomore Jerome Davis turned in his best scoring performance of the season to help lead the Huntingdon men's basketball team past Piedmont 72-69 on Saturday.

With leading scorer Austin Hill in foul trouble early, Davis came through with 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

"We played hard and picked up another key conference win," Huntingdon head coach Mike Pugh said. "We had a lot of guys do good things for us today. We had to play together to get the win and I'm very proud of the way we played.

"But Jerome deserves a lot of credit. Austin was in foul trouble early and did not play as much as usual. When you lose a guy who is averaging 20.3 points per game, you need someone else to step up and Jerome did. Jerome really carried us on offense today."

In addition to Davis, Terry Moorer had 14 points and seven rebounds, Jason Varney added 13 points and three steals and Byron Dudley followed with nine points, four assists and three steals.

The win was the sixth in the past seven games for the Hawks (7-12, 6-3 USA South). The Hawks remain in third place in the conference.

The Hawks led for much of the game, but never by more than eight points. Piedmont (7-12, 2-7 USA South) rallied in the final minutes and made it a one-point game, 70-69, with 1:18 to play.

Moorer answered with a jumper to give Huntingdon a 72-69 lead with 40 seconds left. Davis and Andre Ashley came up with two big defensive rebounds in the final 24 seconds to help hold off the Lions.

Huntingdon returns to action on Wednesday at LaGrange (12-9, 6-4 USA South). Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
