Hawks lose tight battle with Sewanee

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team battled Sewanee to the final seconds but lost 73-71 on Sunday in the Black Tie Classic at Birmingham-Southern.

Huntingdon carried a three-point lead, 70-67, into the final two minutes before Sewanee took the lead for good with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer in a span of 40 seconds.

After a free throw by Ceaunte Zachery, Huntingdon trailed 72-71 with 58 seconds to play. Following a missed Huntingdon shot, the Hawks were forced to foul with four seconds remaining. Sewanee hit 1-of-2 free throws and hung on for the win.

Sophomore Damien Madison led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. James Harris and Zachery each added 14 points and Aaron Washington had nine points. Dylan Bohling had a team-high six rebounds and Zachery had three steals.

Huntingdon played from behind for much of the first half and trailed by 10 points, 41-31, less than a minute before halftime. But the Hawks used a 21-7 run during the final minute of the first half and the first eight minutes of the second half to change the momentum.

The Hawks closed the first half with a 5-0 run and only trailed 41-36 at the start of the second half. Huntingdon took a 47-46 lead on a basket by Zachery, a little more than five minutes into the second half.

A 3-pointer by Washington and a pair of free throws by Bohling gave Huntingdon its largest lead of the game, 52-48, with 12:52 to play in the game. Neither team would lead by more than four points for the remainder of the game.
