Strachan tied for first, Huntingdon men’s golf team in second after first round of Rhodes Fall Classic
TUNICA, Miss. – Huntingdon junior Sam Strachan is tied for first individually and the Huntingdon men's golf team is in second place after the first round of the Rhodes Fall Classic.
Strachan shot a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round at Tunica National Golf Club on Sunday and is tied for first with Jacob Clay of LeTourneau University. Huntingdon freshman Steven Smith is one stroke back and tied for third with a 72.
In the 105-man field, all five Huntingdon golfers are within nine strokes of first place entering the final round. Sophomore Jamey Lester is tied for 17th with a 3-over 75, sophomore Cates Culpepper is tied for 63rd at 7-over 79 and freshman Thomas Mitchell is tied for 74th with an 8-over 80.
The University of Texas-Tyler leads the team standings at 292. Huntingdon is five strokes back at 297. A pair of teams from Rhodes College are in third and fourth. The Rhodes Black team shot 298 and the Rhodes Red team shot 299. Transylvania University is fifth at 302.
The final round will be played on Monday.
