Hawks finish 10th in National Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Huntingdon men's golf team tied for the second lowest round on the final day of the NCAA Division III National Championship to finish 10th.

The Hawks shot 12-over-par 300 on Friday on the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort. Huntingdon finished the tournament with a four-round total of 1204.

Oglethorpe won the national title with an 1171. Transylvania was second at 1191, Methodist was third at 1192 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was fourth at 1196. Transylvania shot 299 on Friday and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot 300.

Huntingdon junior Sam Strachan and freshman Thomas Mitchell each finished in the top 12 individually and earned second-team All-American honors. Strachan shot a 3-over 75 on Friday and finished the tournament tied for ninth at 7-over 295. Mitchell shot a 1-over 73 in the final round and finished tied for 12th at 8-over 296.

Oglethorpe freshman Anthony Maccaglia claimed medalist honors with a 6-under 282 in four rounds. Maccaglia, who shot 68, 71 and 68 in the first three rounds, shot a 3-over 75 in the final round. Oglethorpe's Hayden Jones was second at even-par 288.

Mitchell's 73 was Huntingdon's best round on Friday. Sophomore Jamey Lester shot 2-over 74 in the final round and finished 51st at 306. Freshman Steven Smith shot 78 in the final round and tied for 70th at 316. Junior Tyler Schmutz shot 86 on Friday and also tied for 70th at 316.
