Huntingdon men’s golf fires final round 285 in Jekyll Island Collegiate

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team turned in its best round in three seasons during the final round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate on Sunday.

The Hawks' 3-under-par 285 in the third round was the best round by any team during the tournament and helped the Hawks climb from 22nd to 11th in the final results of the 30-team tournament. Huntingdon finished with a three-round total of 896.

Huntingdon last shot 285 in the Piedmont Spring Invitational in 2011. The score ties for the Hawks' eighth best round during the NCAA era.

"Today was a great round of golf under really tough conditions," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "The wind was blowing really hard but the guys handled the conditions well. Under par on this course is a good round.

"But with the weather we had, to turn in the low round of the tournament was great for our guys. It should be a great confidence boost going into the Wynlakes Intercollegiate next week."

Three Hawks shot par or better on Sunday. Senior Jamey Lester shot a 3-under 69 in the final round, junior Steven Smith shot a 2-under 70, senior Rodes Bowers shot an even-par 72 and senior Griffin Just was 2-over at 74.

Lester and Smith finished the tournament tied for 29th at 223, Just tied for 36th at 224 and Bowers finished at 231.

Illinois Wesleyan's Tony Albano was the tournament medalist with a 5-under 211. Illinois Wesleyan was the team champion with a three-round total of 870. Methodist was second at 880 and St. John Fisher College was third at 881.

Huntingdon hosts the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on March 24-25.
