Men’s golf in 4th entering final round of USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shot three strokes better on Saturday but dropped from third to fourth in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Huntingdon shot 311 in the second round and has a two-round total of 625. LaGrange is first at 609, Methodist is second at 614 and Greensboro is third at 624.

Senior Rodes Bowers is four strokes off the lead and tied for seventh at 152. Bowers shot 4-over-par in each of the first two rounds. LaGrange's Cory Howard leads the field with a 4-over 148 after two rounds.

"Rodes had another good round, except for the final hole," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "He led the tournament after 35 holes, but slipped back to seventh after the final hole. I expect him to finish strong on Sunday."

Huntingdon senior Griffin Just is 14th with a 155 and junior Steven Smith is tied for 20th at 160. Freshman Will Thrash is tied for 22nd at 161 and sophomore David James is tied for 35th at 167.

"The weather was a great deal better today, but we did not put ourselves in good positions," Schreyer said. "Donald Ross courses are known for their treacherous greens and we have to get below the pins on our approach shots. We have put ourselves in a tough position for Sunday, but our guys are due for some breaks. We want to come out and play our best round of the season."

The tournament concludes at Benvenue Country Club on Sunday.
