Shephard leads Hawks to win in Wynlakes Intercollegiate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Stephen Shephard won his first collegiate tournament and the Huntingdon men's golf team won its third event of the season with a win in the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

The 10th-ranked Hawks shot 2-over-par 290 in the final round and won the tournament by six strokes with an 8-over 584. Emory University was the runner-up with a two-round 590. The Huntingdon B-Team finished seventh in the 12-team tournament with a score of 615.

This is the Hawks' first win at Wynlakes since 2010 when the tournament was known as the Wynlakes Wynter Nationals. Shephard's win was the first individual win at the tournament since 2012.

"This is the first time we have won here since I've been back and that's a good feeling," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "It's a disappointing feeling when you don't win your home tournament. So, it's very satisfying to win this year."

Shephard shot his best round as a Hawk with a 3-under 69 in the final round and finished with a 3-under 141. Tied with Emory's Stefano Butti after 36 holes, Shephard won the tournament on a playoff hole.

"It's good for Stephen to come in and win as a freshman," Schreyer said. "Stephen is a talented golfer, but he struggled in the fall. He's put in a lot of work and a lot of hours and it's good to see him playing at the level we knew he was capable of playing."

Shephard is the third Hawk to win a tournament since the start of the fall season. Junior Addison Lambeth won the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial in October and junior Will Thrash won the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate in early March.

"The thing I'm most excited about is that we have had three different guys win tournaments this season," Schreyer said. "That's nice and it gives the guys some confidence. We know that in any given tournament, we have several guys capable of winning. The thing is I still feel like we have some other guys who are capable of winning too."

Lambeth shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday and placed third, finishing one stroke off the lead with a 2-under 142. Lambeth, who is ranked ninth in Division III, finished five strokes ahead of the No. 1 and No. 2 golfers in Division III.

LaGrange's Logan Lanier (No. 1) and Mary Hardin-Baylor's Mats Heien (No. 2) each shot 3-over 147 to tie for ninth. Playing with the Huntingdon B-Team, junior Chad Ring also tied for ninth at 147. Ring shot a 1-over 73 in the final round.

Behind Shephard and Lambeth, sophomore Jon Colten Stanaland shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and tied for 12th with a 36-hole total of 149. Thrash shot a 3-over 75 in the final round and tied for 18th at 152. Senior David James shot 155 for the tournament.

Following Ring on the B-Team, sophomore Chase Feagin shot 155, junior Wesley Etheredge shot 156, freshman Joaquin Trigueros shot 157 and freshman Sterling Dixon shot 180.

Huntingdon returns to action in the Emory Spring Invitational on April 10-11.
