ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Huntingdon men's golf team climbed one spot to fifth place in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships on Wednesday.

Huntingdon shot a 12-over-par 300 in the second round at Midvale Country Club. The Hawks shot a 16-over 300 at Mendon Golf Club in the first round on Tuesday and have a 28-over 600 entering Thursday's third round.

Fifth-place Huntingdon is 15 strokes off the lead and six strokes out of second place. Tournament leader Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which shot 286 in the opening round, maintained its lead with a 299 on Wednesday and has a 13-over 585 after two rounds.

Washington & Lee is second with a 22-over 594 and Methodist and St. Thomas (Minn.) are tied for third at 25-over 597.

"We showed signs of life through nine holes today, but faltered coming in," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We are only half way home and it has been a struggle. Our top three are really close. If we can step it up from No. 1-5, we have the potential to make a good run."

Following Wednesday's round, the 41-team field was cut to 15 teams for the final two rounds. In addition to Huntingdon and Methodist, 10th-place LaGrange is the third USA South Athletic Conference team to make the cut.

Huntingdon juniors Will Thrash and Addison Lambeth are both three strokes off the lead and tied for ninth at 3-over 146 entering the third round. Thrash led the Hawks on Wednesday with an even-par 72 and Lambeth shot a 2-over 74.
