Top-ranked Huntingdon leads Callaway Gardens Invitational after Rd. 1

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The top-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team opened the spring season with an 8-over-par 296 in the first round of the Callaway Gardens Invitational.

The Hawks lead the 18-team field that includes 11 other Top-25 Division III teams. Emory (No. 13) is second at 297 and 11th-ranked LaGrange is third at 299. Eight strokes separate the top-10 teams.

"We had tough conditions today. The wind was up with hard and fast greens, but the boys managed to gut out a respectable round after a terrible start," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "Hopefully we will take away the good things from this round and bounce back with a better round on Tuesday."

Huntingdon seniors Chad Ring, Addison Lambeth and Will Thrash are each within four strokes of first entering Tuesday's final round. Ring shot an even-par 72 and is tied for fourth. Lambeth shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for seventh and Thrash shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 14th.

Emory's Connor Yakubov leads the tournament with a 2-under 70.

Rounding out the Hawks' top-five, sophomore Stephen Shephard shot a 5-over 77 and freshman Alex Aulerich shot 82. Playing as an individual, sophomore Mark Connelly shot 81.
