Shephard and Hawks place 2nd in Golfweek DIII Invitational

SANDESTIN, Fla. – Senior Stephen Shephard finished one stroke out of first and the Huntingdon men's golf team placed second in the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational on Tuesday.

Shephard shot a 2-under-par 69 in the final round and tied for second in the three-round tournament with a 6-under 207. The 207 is two strokes off of the Hawks' NCAA-era record for 54 holes set by Shephard last season and tied by senior Henry Gee this season.

As a team, the third-ranked Hawks shot 3-under 281 in the final round at the Raven Golf Club and placed second with a 1-under 851. Top-ranked Emory won the 18-team tournament with a 10-under 842.

Methodist's Dan Shephard was the tournament medalist with a 7-under 206.

Three other Hawks finished within 10 strokes of first. Junior Drew Mathers tied for 19th with a 2-over 215 and Gee and senior Mark Connelly tied for 22nd with a 3-over 216.

Mathers shot an even-par 71 in the final round and Gee shot a 3-over 74. Connelly shot his best round of the season with a 2-under 69.

Freshman Carson Whitton shot a 1-over 72 in the final round and tied for 33rd with a 7-over 220.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon closes out the fall season in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial on Oct. 22-23.
