Gee and 2nd-ranked Hawks in the lead after Rd. 1 of Savannah Harbor Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The second-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team opened the spring season with a strong performance in the first round of the Savannah Harbor Classic on Monday.

The Savannah Harbor Classic is made up of the teams that were scheduled play in the Callaway Gardens Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the weather during the previous week and the course conditions at Callaway, the tournament was moved to The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa.

Huntingdon shot an 8-over-par 296 in Monday's first round and leads the 18-team field. The field includes nine nationally-ranked teams. Eighth-ranked Methodist and 20th-ranked Hampden Sydney are two strokes behind Huntingdon and tied for second at 10-over 298. Sixth-ranked Guilford College is fourth at 12-over 300.

Huntingdon senior Henry Gee turned in the tournament's best round on Monday with a 2-under 70 and is one of two Hawks in the top-five. Junior Drew Mathers is two strokes off the lead and tied for fifth with an even-par 72. Including the final four rounds of the fall, this was Mathers' fifth straight round of par-or-better.

Seniors Stephen Shephard and Mark Connelly are both within eight shots of the lead. Shephard is six strokes out of first and tied for 28th with a 4-over 76 and Connelly is eight strokes out of first and tied for 42nd with a 6-over 78.

Rounding out the Hawks' top-five, freshman Cody Argade shot an 83 on Monday.
