2nd-ranked Huntingdon tied for 4th after Rd. 1 of Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shot a 2-over-par 290 on Friday in the opening round of the Jekyll Island Invitational.

Entering Saturday's second round, the second-ranked Hawks are two strokes out of first and tied for fourth. The 30-team field includes 14 nationally ranked teams.

Third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan and 17th-ranked LaGrange are tied for first after Rd. 1 at even-par 88. Top-ranked Emory is third with a 1-over 289 and 14th-ranked Hampden-Sydney is tied with Huntingdon for fourth.

Senior Stephen Shephard and junior Drew Mathers led the Hawks in the first round. Both Shephard and Mathews each shot a 3-under 69, are one stroke out of first and tied for fourth. Three golfers are tied for the lead after 18 holes at 4-under 68.

Behind Shephard and Mathers, senior Mark Connelly shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 51st. Senior Henry Gee shot a 5-over 77 and freshman Carson Whitton shot a 6-over 78.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the second round of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Saturday.
