Mathers tied for 2nd, Hawks tied for 8th after Rd. 1 of NCAA Tournament

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Junior Drew Mathers is tied for second place and the Huntingdon men's golf team is tied for eighth after the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday.                                                                                

The second-ranked Hawks shot 11-over-par 299 and are 12 strokes out of first at Keene Trace Golf Club. Entering Wednesday's second round, third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan leads the 42-team field with a 1-under 287 and Concordia University-Texas is second with an even-par 288.

Mathers, the second-ranked golfer in Division III, shot a 2-under 70 and is one stroke out of first. This was Mathers' 19th round of par-or-better in 25 rounds this season.

Williams College's Sam Goldenring leads the tournament with a 3-under 69. Three other golfers are tied with Mathers for second. Huntingdon senior Henry Gee is four strokes out of first and tied for 20th with a 1-over 73.

Senior Stephen Shephard, the third-ranked golfer in Division III, shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 81st, senior Mark Connelly shot a 7-over 79 and freshman Carson Whitton shot 9-over 81.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday.
