Mathers tied for 2nd, No. 3 Hawks in 3rd after Day 1 of NCAA Fall Preview

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The third-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team shot 602 in the first two rounds of the NCAA DIII Fall Preview on Saturday.

Entering Sunday's final round, the Hawks are third in an 18-team field that features 15 nationally ranked teams and 11 of the top 12 teams in Division III.

Top-ranked Illinois Wesleyan leads the field with an 11-over-par 587. The defending national champions shot an 8-over 296 in the first round and a 3-over 291 in the second round. Second-ranked Emory is two strokes off the lead with a 13-over 589.

Huntingdon shot 8-over 296 in Round 1 and 18-over 306 in Round 2.  Six strokes behind Huntingdon, 22nd-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.) and 15th-ranked St. John's (Minn.) are tied for fourth at 608.

Huntingdon senior Drew Mathers is tied for second and one stroke off the lead with an even-par 144 through two rounds. Mathers shot a 2-under 70 in Round 1 and a 2-over 74 in Round 2.

Illinois Wesleyan's Jimmy Morton leads the field with a 1-under 143. St. John's David Schneider, St. Thomas' Emmet Herb and Illinois Wesleyan's Rob Wuethrich are tied with Mathers for second.

Behind Mathers, junior Owen Burt shot a 2-over 74 in the first round and a 4-over 76 in the second round. He is seven strokes out of first and tied for 17th at 6-over 150.

Sophomore Carson Whitton is two strokes behind Burt and tied for 24th at 8-over 152. Whitton shot 2-over 74 in the opening round and 6-over 78 in the second round.

Sophomore Cody Argade shot 6-over 78 in both rounds and is tied for 43rd at 12-over 156 and junior Connor Bruce shot 7-over 79 in each round and is tied for 56th at 14-over 158.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the NCAA DIII Fall Preview on Sunday.
