Mathers fires second 64 of the fall as Hawks place 2nd in Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational

SANDESTIN, Fla. – Senior Drew Mathers and the Huntingdon men's golf team finished strong in the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational on Tuesday at the Raven Golf Course.

Mathers closed the tournament with a 7-under-par 64 in the final round and placed second with a 9-under 204. Illinois Wesleyan's Rob Wuethrich edged Mathers by three strokes to earn medalist honors with a 12-under 201.

As a team, the third-ranked Hawks shot 1-under 283 in the final round and placed second with a 6-under 846. Second-ranked and defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan won the three-round tournament with a 15-under 837. The 18-team tournament included 15 nationally ranked teams.

Huntingdon's three-round 846 tied for the third best 54-hole total by the Hawks during the NCAA era.

Mathers' final-round 64 tied the program's NCAA-era record for a single round, set by former Division III Golfer of the Year Addison Lambeth in 2017 and tied by Mathers earlier this fall.

Mathers, a first-team All-American last season and the No. 1 ranked golfer in Division III this season, has turned in seven rounds in the 60s this fall. Through 12 rounds this fall, he has recorded five of the top 16 rounds by a Hawk during the NCAA era.

Mathers' 132 in the final two rounds tied the Huntingdon NCAA-era record for 36 holes that he set earlier this fall and his three-round 204 was two strokes off the Huntingdon NCAA-era record for 54 holes that he set earlier this fall.

Junior Connor Bruce joined Mathers in the top-10 of the tournament, tying for ninth with a 2-under 211. Bruce shot a 2-over 73 in the final round.

Sophomore Carson Whitton shot a 1-over 72 in the final round and tied for 16th with a 1-over 214. Junior Owen Burt turned in a 3-over 74 in the final round and tied for 30th with a 4-over 217 and sophomore Walker Hinds shot 4-over 75 in the final round and finished with a three-round 231.
