Huntingdon falls to Ferrum in 3OT in SEILC title game

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team controlled the first 36 minutes of Sunday's inaugural Southeast Independent Lacrosse Championship title game.

But Ferrum took control in the second half and pulled out a 13-12 victory in triple overtime. This was just the second overtime game in Huntingdon's four seasons and the first triple overtime game.

Huntingdon (6-13) started strong and built a 5-1 lead in the first period and led 9-3 at the half. After one goal by Jakob Works and two goals by LaDarius Williams, the Hawks led 12-4 with 8:57 left in the third period.

But the momentum began to turn. Ferrum scored eight unanswered goals in the final 24 minutes of regulation to force overtime. The tying goal came with 40 seconds left in the fourth period.

After two scoreless overtime periods, Ferrum's Josh Brent scored the winning goal with 2:30 left in the third overtime period.

Williams and Works each finished with five goals. Works also had two assists and three caused turnovers and Williams had three ground balls.

Brandon Sewell added one goal and two assists, Brandon Scheele had one goal and won five faceoffs and Karson Hastings had two assists. Josh Clayton and Davis Dalton each had two caused turnovers and Glen Troxell and Kristian Smith each had three ground balls.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez had four saves and three goals allowed in the first half and Smith had eight saves and 10 goals allowed in the second half and three overtimes.

The SEILC is comprised of the five USA South Athletic Conference members who compete in men's lacrosse. The top four teams advanced to the tournament.
